How to Avoid Getting Shadowbanned

When you think you are doing everything right and you aren’t getting the engagement you should on your social media accounts, it is frustrating. If you haven’t made any significant changes to your account or your posts recently, you may suspect that you have been shadowbanned. In this post, we’ll discuss what a shadowban is and how you can avoid it happening to you.

What Is a Shadowban?

A shadowban is when a user is muted or blocked on a social media site without being notified. Most of the time, the user can still see their own posts and have no idea that no one else can. Being shadowbanned doesn’t mean you have broken the terms of service and have gotten kicked off the platform, but something you did was brought to the attention of the admin and moderators. This hides your posts from your followers and restricts new followers from finding you.

Although most people agree that social media platforms periodically shadowban accounts, most platforms refuse to confirm it. In fact, they often strongly deny being involved in the practice of shadowbanning. Still, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok are three of the platforms that many shadowbans appear to occur on.

Tips to Avoid Getting Shadowbanned

Many people who find themselves shadowbanned think there was nothing they did to call for a shadowban. However, this probably isn’t true. Unfortunately, there are a lot of things you may have done accidentally that led to a platform penalizing your account.

Use Hashtags Correctly

While hashtags are the best way to get more organic reach, if used incorrectly, they can actually hurt your account. If you use too many hashtags, irrelevant hashtags, or banned hashtags, you may become shadowbanned. To combat this, you should only use hashtags that are relevant to your industry, location, and photo or video content. Frequently check the hashtags you use in your posts to make sure they aren’t banned. Some hashtags bounce back and forth between being banned and being ok to use, so it is something you will want to do regularly.

Leave Engaging Comments

Social media admins try to pick up bot accounts. Often, these are accounts that post many comments with the same short phrase like “Nice post!” or “Beautiful.” When you leave a comment on other posts, make sure it is over 5 words. Also,  customize it to the post you are commenting on. Leave something worthwhile that clearly shows you meant to leave that comment on this specific post and not just any post out there.

Start Native Posting

Not too long ago, Instagram changed its terms of use, so now it prefers posts that are shared directly onto the app manually instead of through a scheduler. If you think you may have been shadowbanned and you use a scheduling tool, start posting directly in the app for a while or mix in posts between the ones done through a scheduler. After a while of doing this, you’ll be able to tell whether the scheduling tool was to blame.

Posting Frequently

To avoid looking like spam to any social media platform’s algorithm, post appropriately to each.  For example, Twitter and Pinterest are the main social platforms that want more than one post a day. But if you post three times per day every day on Instagram, your account may be flagged as spam.

What photos or videos do you use?

By default, we can use the photos you have on your website as well as utilizing the plethora of photos available to us within our royalty free library.

If you have photos or videos for us to use, depending on your subscription, we welcome you to upload them into a Google Drive folder and share that link with us!

Looking for custom videos?  Some of our plans include videos or you can add them to any plan starting at $98/mo!

How do you mimic my branding colors and style?

As mentioned above, depending on your plan, we can use whatever you’d like to provide us! If not, we’ll resort to using your website or our royalty free library.

That being said, we can come up with custom graphics that suit your branding style as an add-on to your posting subscription.

$98/month for 3 custom graphics each week
$148/month for 5 custom graphics each week

Note: The cost of custom graphics is on top of your monthly subscription cost

What is content review & approval?

Content review and approval is where your social media content creator sends you a weeks worth of posts, prior to their designated publication time the following week.

This way, you will have the chance to give us feedback on each post in case you’d like us to make a minor edit.

Note: One round of editing per post permitted, depending on your plan.

What are the results I can expect from your posting services?

The idea behind consistent posting onto your social media pages is to keep them active with content that promotes your business solutions, educates your audience to showcase your expertise and to also keep things lighthearted, it’s social media after all!

There’s nothing worse for a business than to earn someone looking into what you do, only for them to see a barren social media page. To them, it may appear that you are out of business or potentially a scam.

We are often asked about growing followers and generating sales or leads. These are great goals to have but please understand that those goals are better obtained through paid advertising campaigns.

For more information on paid advertising, please visit our paid advertising services.

Do you use a posting scheduler and how do you get access to my business pages?

We are fortunate to be partnered with CloudCampaign.com to utilize their excellent scheduling platform.

By signing up for our content services, we will set you up with your own Cloud Campaign workspace depending on your plan.

During onboarding we request admin access to your social accounts using a secure platform. This allows us to manage the occasional disconnect when the platforms push out updates.

Furthermore, with your own workspace you are welcome to view and edit content at your leisure!

Why do my posts say “Posted by Cloud Campaign”

We use Cloud Campaign, which is a 3rd party app, to scale social media management and posting. When a post says “Posted by Cloud Campaign”, it is only the admins of your company page that can see this and not your followers.
