How to Build a Digital Marketing Plan

There are many different ways companies can market their business online. Just a few of them include social media marketing, search engine optimization (SEO), and social media advertising. There are more, and in each category, you will find a specialty of its own, with its own unique best practices and set of skills. An effective digital marketing plan will include a variety of approaches for the most well-rounded strategy. If you’ve decided to start building a digital marketing plan for your business, keep reading to make sure you cover all your bases.

Create Your Customer Persona

Before you start getting into specifics, you’ll want to create your customer persona. This is the universal starting point for every digital marketing plan. A customer persona goes one step further than identifying your target audience. It includes more than just information such as age, gender, occupation, etc. A customer persona is what describes your ideal customer as determined by contacting and surveying a pre-defined target group. It includes additional aspects such as the things they like to do in their spare time, what their motivations are for purchasing, and even what concerns they have about society.

Identify Your Tools and Goals

You have to have a goal with almost all things in life, and the same is true for building your digital marketing plan. The plan is not going to work if you don’t have the main task defined. However, this should not be a very general goal. You’ll want to ensure that it is specific to your business and measurable. For example, a good goal would be “to increase sales by 15% in the next 6 months,” as opposed to “ to increase sales.

Calculate Your Budget

This step of planning your digital marketing strategy could come at various different stages of the process. No matter when you do it, it is extremely important! The budget you decide on will define how many resources you can dedicate to the plan. This could be a big determining factor in what strategies or tactics you utilize. While it’s important to figure this out upfront, you sould still remain flexible. For example, you may realize that a specific tactic pays much higher dividends than another. Do not lock yourself into a budget so much that you aren’t able to make adjustments when necessary.

Focus on Good Content

Any digital marketing plan needs high-quality content. This content will be used extensively throughout your entire digital marketing plan. One major area to focus on is a blog. This content can pay dividends, bringing more traffic to your site, positioning you against other companies, reinforcing your social media presence, and other critical functions. When you regularly update your blog with high-quality content, it makes your website easy to find. This will go a long way toward improving your SEO as well as other aspects of your digital marketing strategy.

Monitor Your Digital Marketing Channels

You should monitor your website, social media account, Google Ads, paid advertising, and all other channels used to make sure they are effective. If you see areas that are not performing the way you expect, then it’s time to make adjustments. One example of monitoring would be to look at how your landing page is working. If it is effective in generating leads, you can continue to use it. If it hasn’t been effective, perhaps you need to redesign it or include more information on it.
